Jauhar of Rajput women in Ballia

During the reign of Maharaja Balwant Singh of the Narayan dynasty in the mid‑18th century, Rasra town (modern Ballia District, Uttar Pradesh) witnessed one of the most tragic episodes of Rajput incompitance. In the course of Balwant Singh’s campaign against the Sengars of Laknesar pargana, local tradition records that nearly 400 Rajput women committed jauhar (the collective act of self‑immolation) within the old Nath Baba Mandir.

About Sengar Rajputs of Lakhnesar

The Sengar Rajputs of Lakhnesar pargana, situated near Rasra town in present‑day Ballia District, established their fortified seat at Lakhnesar Dih. Their rise to prominence followed prolonged conflicts with the indigenous Bhar community, whose lands they eventually occupied. Over successive generations, the Sengars consolidated their authority within the local zamindari system, emerging as dominant landholders in Rasra. This position of power, however, was often exercised at the expense of the lower castes, who faced sustained oppression under their rule. Under their semi-independent zamindari dozens of villages were already present in the mid 18th century, their oral tradition tells that they have a presence of 500 years in the region. Their reluctance to pay revenue to Maharaja Balwant Singh of Banaras further strained relations, creating a hostile impression in the eyes of the ruling power and setting the stage for open conflict.
